Who is Nigar Johar?
In the Pakistan Army, Lieutenant General Nigar Johar Khan is a three-star general. During the history of the Pakistan Army, Johar is the only woman to reach the rank of lieutenant-general, as well as the third person to reach the rank of major-general.
She is currently the surgeon general of the Pakistan Army and a member of the Pakistan Army Medical Corps.
Education and background:
Johar was born to a Pashtun family in Panjpir village, Swabi District, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Her father, Qadir, was an army colonel. Both her parents along with her two younger sisters died in a car accident in 1989.
Johar completed her schooling through the Presentation Convent Girls High School, Rawalpindi in 1978. She joined the Army Medical College (AMC) in 1981, graduating in 1985. After passing the exam for membership in the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan in 2010, she became a member of the college. Through the Armed Forces Postgraduate Medical Institute, she earned a diploma in Advance Medical Administration in 2012, and a Master of Public Health degree in 2015 from the same institution.
Military career:
The Pakistan Army promoted her to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed her as Surgeon General on 30 June 2020. Her most recent position at the Combined Military Hospital Rawalpindi was deputy commandant in 2015. General Johar was promoted to major general among 37 brigadiers on 9 February 2017.
At a meeting presided over by General Qamar Javed Bajwa, the Army Selection Board approved her promotions. At that time, she was Vice-Principal of the Army Medical College. In her current position, she is the Surgeon General of the Pakistan Army. Rawalpindi’s Pak-Emirates Military Hospital was under her command as well.
